Read full description of the books The Count of Monte Cristo, V1 (The Count of Monte Cristo, part 1 of 2):I read this in high school, in the original French, because we had to, but I liked it so much I also read it in English. Even without the movie (5 stars, but different), the story stuck with me...all the bitter angst! His poor heart, so afraid to trust again, so tormented by rage and vengeance.
As a young adult on the cusp of a good career at sea, Dantès goes to prison for life, in the dungeons of the Chateau d'If, framed and betrayed by his jealous "friends" and sentenced by a self-interested magistrate. Once in prison, Dantès meets Abbé Faria, an Italian priest and philosopher, incarcerated for his political views. Faria educates Dantès during these 16 years, transforming the rough sailor into a cultured gentleman, and talking with him of life, god, and philosophy. He also tells Dantès about a treasure, hidden on Monte Cristo.
Dantès escapes, and with the buried treasure, he returns to Paris incognito -- the Count of Monte Cristo -- wealthy beyond belief, and bitter to the core. He will make them pay!! They will rue the day...
Including the girl he's always loved...who claimed to love him...but married his betrayer and bore him a son...
So much angst!
There are many coincidences. Highly improbable, but yet... Karma?
Jolly good! Profoundly moving. (But long.)
